Welcome, welcome, welcome everyone to October! Can you feel it? Do we need to cue the ultimate Halloween song — this is Halloween, this is Halloween? October is here, and with it comes cooler nights, shifting winds, and the unmistakable start of the desert’s vibrant season.
With the nights are finally cooling down, the winds are starting to whisper, and the desert air has that familiar fall crispness, it’s safe to say that this is one of my favorite times of the year in the Coachella Valley, the start of season when the desert wakes back up and we all get to enjoy our homes a little differently.
In today’s blog, I’m sharing five essential home maintenance tips to help prepare your desert home for fall and beyond. October is all about setting boundaries, keeping dust out, warmth in, and creating a sense of calm and comfort as we move closer to the holidays.
Think of it as your home’s moment to put its shield up before the Santa Ana winds arrive.

1. Seal your Windows and Doors
Before the desert winds kick in, take a moment to fortify your home’s edges. The Santa Ana gusts can be intense, carrying fine dust, allergens, and even a few uninvited pests. Start by inspecting the weather stripping around your windows, doors, and sliders. If you notice cracks, gaps, or brittle foam, replace it so that your home stays sealed and secure. Once that’s done, test for any leaks by lighting a candle or a stick of incense near the edges of your windows. If you see the smoke drift, it’s time to reseal with fresh caulk or new stripping. Creating a tight seal keeps your air clean, your indoor temperature consistent, and your HVAC system running efficiently.
2. Refresh Windows and Screens
After a long, sun-soaked summer, your windows deserve a little love. Between the dust, sprinklers, and hard water, buildup can dull the light that fills your home. Take the time to wash both sides of the glass with a gentle vinegar solution or streak-free cleaner to remove calcium deposits and grime. Then, rinse your screens thoroughly with a hose and let them dry fully before reinstalling to prevent mold or warping. Don’t forget to clean the sliding door tracks as well, since dirt and debris can prevent them from closing tightly and allow more dust to enter. Once everything sparkles again, you’ll notice how the golden autumn light flows through your space more clearly, creating a refreshed and inviting atmosphere.
3. Prep Fireplaces and Fire Features
It’s cozy season time, and there’s nothing like gathering by the fire on a cool desert night. Before you light that first flame, make sure your fireplaces and outdoor fire features are ready and safe to use. If it’s been over a year since your last chimney cleaning, schedule a professional sweep to remove soot and buildup so your system can operate safely. For gas fireplaces, fire pits, and patio heaters, check that all igniters are working, caps are secure, and there are no leaks in the lines. Once you know everything is functioning properly, you can relax with your favorite blanket and enjoy the warmth and glow of desert nights under the stars.
4. Trim Trees and Check Your Roof
The Santa Ana winds can do serious damage if your yard isn’t maintained, so it’s best to take care of any overgrowth now. Trim your palms, trees, and shrubs to clear branches that hang near your roof, solar panels, or power lines. Keeping a clean perimeter helps prevent damage during windstorms and keeps pests from finding their way into your home. It’s also the perfect time to inspect your roof for cracked or loose tiles, worn flashing, or debris that might have built up over the summer. Pay extra attention to valleys and edges where sand and leaves tend to collect. A little attention now can prevent costly repairs later and keep your home protected through the season.
5. Deep Clean and Replace Filters
As the air cools and windows start opening more often, your home deserves a good refresh. Begin by replacing your air and water filters so your systems can run efficiently and provide cleaner air and better-tasting water. Then focus on dusting the often-forgotten areas such as baseboards, vents, fan blades, and behind large appliances where desert dust loves to hide. This kind of deep clean makes your home feel lighter and more breathable while also improving your indoor air quality. You’ll notice a difference right away as your space feels calmer, fresher, and ready to embrace the season ahead.
