Welcome, welcome, welcome everyone to September! This year seems to be flying by, doesn’t it? As we move from the sweltering heat of summer to cooler evenings, it’s the perfect time for some essential home maintenance. In this blog post, I’m going to share five tips to help prepare your desert home for the fall season. With these tips, you’ll optimize comfort and refresh your environment, getting ready for my favorite time of the year, the harvest season.
As the desert begins to shift from extreme heat to cooler evenings, September is a pivotal time to reset your space. It’s all about optimizing comfort, refreshing your environment, and preparing for the season ahead. Think of it as your opportunity to exhale after summer—and prep your home for a smoother fall.
Exhale After the Summer Hustle
Think of September as your opportunity to exhale after a long, hot summer. The past few Augusts have been increasingly humid, but as we enter these -ember months (September, October, November, December), things start to change. Let’s dive into how you can prepare your home for a smooth transition into fall.

1. Service Your HVAC System
Before the nights get really cool, make sure your HVAC system is ready. September can still carry remnants of summer heat, and you want your system to smoothly transition from cooling to heating. Book a professional inspection to ensure there are no leaks or issues with your system. A properly functioning system will keep you comfortable as the seasons change.
While you’re at it, make sure you check you air filter, even if you did recently. Living in the desert means dealing with a lot of dust, especially after summer’s fires and winds. Changing your air filters will improve the airflow in your home, reducing strain on your HVAC system. Trust me, cleaner air will make your home feel so much nicer.
2. Adjust Your Irrigation System
Your plants don’t need as much water now as they did in the peak of summer. Overwatering during this season can actually harm them, leading to soggy soil and root rot. Reprogram your irrigation timer for shorter cycles, ideally in the early morning or evening when temperatures are lower and evaporation is minimal. This small change conserves water while keeping your landscape healthy.
3. Declutter Your Garage and Storage Spaces
Fall is the perfect season to clear out what you don’t need. Instead of waiting for spring cleaning, use this time to sort through your garage and storage areas. Donate or discard items you haven’t used in years, and organize your space by season. A tidy garage means easier access when cooler weather activities kick in.
4. Seal and Secure Your Home
As temperatures dip, critters look for warm places to hide, don’t let your home be one of them. Check your windows, doors, and other entry points for gaps or cracks. Add fresh caulking and replace worn-out weather stripping to keep unwanted visitors out and your indoor temperature balanced.
5. Roof and Gutter Maintenance
After a long summer of sun and monsoons, your roof and gutters deserve attention. Clear away any debris, check for signs of damage, and make sure drainage systems are functioning properly. A little preventative maintenance now helps you avoid costly repairs down the road.
