GETTING TO KNOW SAHARA
SUN | MOON | ASCENDANT
Sun and Moon in Capricorn, Ascendant in Sagittarius! I’ve always felt more like a Sag, always up for an adventure or traveling, but especially in the past year, I’ve felt this serious sense of grounding and can feel my Capricorn kicking in. I’m definitely an Earth Mama and feel very connected to nature, the environment, animals, tribal music, African dance, shamanic healing and of course, food!
SPIRIT ANIMAL
PEACOCK
CURRENT MANTRA TO HELP YOU THRIVE
Hmm.. I always remind myself that I am a vessel of the universal consciousness that channels through me. All I have to do is tune in to this information and let it pour through me. My purpose is to be a medium and spread this light.
FAVORITE GODDESS
Saraswati <3 She is literally me (hence why I named my clothing line, Saraswati Couture, after her!) She is the goddess of creativity, knowledge, literature, arts and music. I feel so deeply connected to her and call upon her everyday in the mantra “Om aim shrim Sarasawti namaha”
FAVORITE CRYSTALS
AMETHYST // AQUAMARINE // TOURMALINE
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR DAILY RITUALS TO HELP YOU FLOW WITH GRACE?
I really live in my body. If my body is in pain, I cannot create. The first thing I do is do some form of exercise, whether it’s barre, pilates or a boot-camp. I was a die-hard yogi but injured my wrist last year and had to totally stop practicing, which has really opened me up to other forms of movement I shied away from. I used to walk by fitness classes and be like “oh god why would you torture yourself like that?” and now feel SO empowered when it’s 10am and I’ve already worked harder than I used to in a month. That strength keeps me going for the rest of the day. Empowered body= empowered mind.
HOW DO YOU FIND BALANCE AS YOU WRITE THE IDIOTS GUIDE TO AYURVEDA?
Writing a 400-page book, it is very easy to become overwhelmed by the enormity of the task. I really take it once step at a time. I focus on each chapter and really make sure I’ve completed it before moving on to the next task. I learned from writing my last book that it is MUCH easier to complete a book when you’ve edited each chapter. My last book was in FULL Shakti flow, with rants and tangents all over the place so it took much longer to EDIT it than to even write it. Since this book I’m hired by a major publisher, Penguin Randomhouse, I really have to stick to the Table of Contents I wrote up, which already outlined every single paragraph. I thought that would make it harder because I normally don’t do well with structure but it’s actually made it much easier because I know exactly what is supposed to come next. Masculine, I guess you do make sense sometimes! 😛
WHY IS SISTARHOOD MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER BEFORE?
Women have been misguided for many years. We’ve been told that we have to be chosen, that there isn’t enough for all of us.. Enough men, jobs, beauty, etc. Now we are seeing that was absolute BULLSHIT. There is MORE than enough for everyone—and much more to life than these things! We are now redefining what is important to us- friendship, awareness, empowerment, divinity. SiSTARhood is all of that. It is the new wave of connecting with our fellow sisters, our soul-tribe, to spread love and light in the world. We aren’t competing, we are uplifting!
WHAT DOES BEING A GODDESS MEAN TO YOU?
To me, being a goddess has nothing to do with having long lustrous hair, awesome bohemian outfits and the latest crystal jewelry (which many see it as due to the media’s portrayal.) You can be a goddess in sweatpants, bun on top of your head and food in your teeth (which is how I am 90% of the day.)
Being a Goddess is not about being perfect but rather the most DIVINE version of yourself. It has nothing to do with physical appearance but rather is a MINDSET. Ask yourself “What would a goddess do?” Would she compete or put down others? Would she be run by her own insecurities and jealousy? Or would she step into her power and use her gifts to inspire the world?
We are all Godly beings and stepping into our GODDESS archetypes means stepping into our highest selves. A goddess isn’t anyone else but YOU in your TRUEST form.
HOW DO YOU LIVE YOUR LIFE AS A SOVEREIGN AQUARIAN WOMAN DURING THIS POWERFUL TIME?
I try to live my life in a state of flow. I follow the Doshic times when I set up my day so I can utilize the hour’s energy for my goals. I do my more structured and organized tasks during Pitta time between 10am-2pm. I schedule my creative tasks from 2pm-6pm because that is when we are the most Vata, influenced by air and space energies. I always catch sunset and wind down during Kapha time, 6pm-10pm. This tremendously helps me because I’m working with, and not against, my body and I teach people in my 12-week program to also set up their days using the Doshic energies.
3 ESSENTIAL BOOKS EVERY WOMAN SHOULD READ
Hmm.. I’ve been reading Awakening Shakti and am obsessed. She explains the various Hindu goddess archetypes and has the most amazing anecdotes for each one. It has taught me so much more about the Goddesses I ever knew before. I love Body Mind Balancing by Osho and everything else by him. Osho has dozens of books but has never written a single one. They are just transcribed versions of his talks because his words were just so powerful that they perfectly make the text of a book. Now that is some ENLIGHTENMENT right there!
I also have learned so much about the feminine and masculine dynamic by books, lectures and notes by David Deida, who really explains the sexual and spiritual relationship between men and women so well. He wrote a great book “The Way of the Man” which is actually a self-help book for men but it has really helped me understand the psyche of the masculine, which has also really helped my relationship.
#1 ADVICE YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE WHO IS JUST STEPPING OUT OF THE SPIRITUAL CLOSET
Follow your curiosity and don’t be afraid to walk the path alone. You don’t need a “spiritual friend” nearby you to give you the permission to begin your journey. I was the ONLY person I knew interested in this sort of stuff and started just Googling information, reading blogs and watching youtube videos about all things healing, spirituality, etc. One thing just led me to another.
I remember when I was 19 looking up “shaman meet-up” on meet-up.com and going to this ladies house with 50 other female shamans, all in their fifties or older, for a beautiful sacred fire gathering. Going there gave me the confidence to take off to Bali on my own, where I stayed for four months and met another siStar who invited me to lead a retreat with her in India, which I did several months later! Since then, I have been leading retreats around the world, bringing other goddess siStars together, all of whom are coming on the journey by themselves.
My next one is the Movement is Medicine Retreat in Costa Rica, which incorporates Ayurvedic healing with Kundalini Vinyasa Flow Yoga, Shamanic Dance Activation and volunteering in a local Costa Rica school, followed by Envision Music, Arts and Dance Festival which is in the middle of the jungle, right on the beach (and the best festival I’ve ever been to!) As a huge THANK YOU I would love to invite your community to join me and offer a special $100 off discount for anyone who feels the call to join! All info can be found on www.MovementisMedicineRetreat.com and it’s ALL goddesses traveling on their own, many for the first time out of the country ever, so you will be in good hands!
All in all, I would have never dipped my toes into this world if I had waited for someone else to join me. Don’t be afraid of taking the journey on your own! There are so many beautiful souls you will find on the way, like you Sabrina! <3
